The tool .The influence of experimental wounding on the ecophysiology of Pitcairnia florida (Araceae) populations in the Brazilian Amazon. Herbivorous insect chewing and sucking are commonly used strategies for herbivory in plants, but the types of insects and the parameters of feeding that limit plant fitness are poorly known. Pitcairnia florida is an herbaceous plant that is widely distributed in the Brazilian Amazon where it is present in forest edge and gallery forests. Its main strategy of defence is the production of a resin with antifungal activity that is mainly located in the leaves. The resin gives rise to sticky surfaces that make it difficult for insects to land and feed on this plant. We experimentally wounded 25 P. florida populations in the Brazilian Amazon using a battery of different herbivores. We tested the number of insects landing on the leaves and the number of leaves per plant that the herbivores were able to feed from. We also measured the strength of the physical resistance of the resin to an enzymatic hydrolysis to the leaves and the resin was quantified. Finally, we compared the number of bites in response to different degrees of herbivory (4 wounds per leaf) among P. florida populations from the Brazilian Amazon. We found that some insect species could only feed on leaves from wild plants, while others were able to feed on leaves from plants previously experimentally wounded. The degree of herbivory did not affect the number of insects landing on the leaves of plants, but did affect the number of leaves per plant that insects were able to feed from, and the strength of the resin. We also found that the mechanical strength of the resin is affected by experimental herbivory, demonstrating the importance of the resin in the defence of this plant against herbivores. Finally, we found that the defence of the resin is greater in females than in males, showing the importance of this plant strategy in herbivore control, since males are more susceptible to herbivory. You are here 2012 News In January 2012, the Foundation launched the Paul T.
